What Is SEO?

The practice of optimizing search engines (SEO) refers to the process of directing targeted traffic to a site by utilizing a search engine's natural results. The most common tasks that are associated with SEO include the creation of high-quality content and optimizing it around certain keywords, and constructing backlinks.

How Search Engines Work

When a user types an inquiry in a search engine the engine begins to scan the index. This includes all of the site's content, as well as any organic ( unpaid) links that point to it. The pages in the index are ranked according to their importance and relevance to your query.

The first few pages of results are typically those that have been searched for most often and contain information that is most relevant to what you're looking for. If there aren't any matches on these first fewpages, the engine will continue scrolling down until it finds something corresponding to your query.
